Edmund J. "Jack" Overton

Edmund J. “Jack” Overton, 82, of Presque Isle, WI, a former long-time Janesville resident, died Friday, September 7, 2012 at Advocate  Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL.  He was born  on June 11, 1930 in Janesville, the son of Edmund and Ruth (Hotchkiss) Overton. He graduated from Janesville High School in 1948. He attended Northwestern University for two years where he was a member of the band. He transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, graduating in 1952.  Jack was a naval officer serving with the Navy during the Korean War. He married Betsy Wiseman on June 16, 1953. Following service, he attended the Wisconsin School of Mortuary Science and became associated in the family business with his father, E.J. “Ted” Overton owning and operating the Overton Funeral Home in Janesville for many years. He was also a Nutri System franchise owner and served as executive administrator  for the Nutri System franchisees for several years. Jack was a long-time member of Cargill United Methodist Church in Janesville where he was a former trustee, sang in the choir and was active in the Men’s Club. He was past president  of the Janesville Noon Rotary Club, the Janesville Visiting Nurse’s Association board and the Janesville Y’s Men’s Club. He  received the Janesville Jaycee’s distinguished service award in 1966. At Presque Isle, Jack was active on the Crab Lake Property Owners Board, active with the Crab Lake ecology committee and  was the editor of the Crab Gab newsletter. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betsy , four sons, Ted  of Scottsdale, AZ, Bill (Terry) of Lake Villa, IL, Rick of Issaquah, WA, Rob of Sacramento, CA, Six grandchildren, Teddy, Christian, Elizabeth, Brock, Carly and Alyssa Overton, his sister, Janice Overton of Putnam, WA. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12 Noon on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Cargill United Methodist Church, 2000 Wesley Avenue, Janesville. Funeral services will follow at 12 Noon Friday at Cargill United Methodist Church with Rev. Lee Meissner officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Project Loon Watch c/o Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, 1411 Ellis Avenue, Ashland, WI 54806.  The family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home. www.henkeclarson.com.
